CACL Inc. to Sell Chopstick Rests and Ceramic Dishes at the National Crafts Museum During the Exhibition “People, Noto, and Art: Art for the Noto Peninsula”

December.08.2025

news

CACL Inc. is pleased to announce that its chopstick rests and small ceramic plates made from pottery fragments will be sold at the museum shop of the National Crafts Museum in conjunction with the exhibition “People, Noto, and Art: Art for the Noto Peninsula,” which will be held from December 9, 2025 (Tue.) to March 1, 2026 (Sun.).

The exhibition aims to support recovery from the Noto Peninsula Earthquake and the Oku-Noto heavy rainfall disaster through the power of culture. Masterpieces held by major cultural institutions in Tokyo, including the Tokyo National Museum, will be displayed across three museums in Kanazawa — the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, and the National Crafts Museum. Visitors will have the opportunity to view a wide range of works, from craft pieces to National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties.

As an organization based in the Noto region and committed to supporting recovery through culture, CACL Inc. is honored to present products made from ceramic fragments during the exhibition period.

Comment from Junichi Okuyama, CEO of CACL Inc.

“The works featured in the museum shop are created by fusing together fragments of ceramic pieces that for various reasons were deemed unusable and were on the verge of being discarded. Rather than restoring them to their original form, the fragments are transformed into something new. This process may reflect the way people in the region continue to move forward while facing the aftermath of the Noto Peninsula Earthquake.

In particular, we do not attempt to conceal the broken parts, but instead choose to highlight them — an aesthetic sensibility connected to the idea of wabi-sabi. I feel there is a uniquely Japanese appreciation for beauty in what is broken. The chipped areas are gently finished through multiple layers of lacquer. I hope you will enjoy the soft, tactile feeling in your hands.”

About CACL Inc.

CACL Inc. is based in Nomi City, Ishikawa Prefecture, an area known for its Kutani ware. The company addresses two intersecting social challenges: the shortage of successors in traditional crafts, and the limited employment opportunities and low wages faced by people with disabilities. To tackle these issues, CACL develops projects that combine craftsmanship with inclusive employment, producing art pieces and products made from reassembled ceramic fragments.

Following the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake, CACL launched the “Stand with NOTO” project as part of its recovery support efforts. This initiative established temporary workshops for Wajima lacquerware artisans and created job opportunities. The company also launched the “Rediscover project,” an expanded art initiative that integrates fragments of Kutani ware with Suzu ware and Wajima lacquer techniques. Artworks made from fragments damaged in the earthquake were exhibited at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, in the exhibition “Dancing with Every Thing — Ecologies of Empathy.”

In July of this year, CACL Inc. launched “KAKERA,” an experimental brand aimed at redefining the value of discarded or non-standard traditional crafts by exploring and producing new materials and products from ceramic fragments. The brand has collaborated with Parfums Givenchy and initiated a joint project with LIXIL and Yuko Nagayama & Associates to carry the traditional landscapes of Noto into the future.
