August.04.2025
CACL Inc. (Representative: Junichi Okuyama, hereinafter “CACL”), a company based in Nomi City, Ishikawa Prefecture, known for its product brand KAKERA that transforms ceramic fragments and other materials into new creations, has produced a new art piece titled “KAKERA 5” as part of a collaboration with Hyatt Centric Kanazawa and Hyatt House Kanazawa (General Manager: Kazuhiro Matsumoto, located in Kanazawa, Ishikawa), which celebrated their 5th anniversary in August 2025.

About the 5th Anniversary Installation “KAKERA 5”
• Dimensions: W 38 cm × H 50 cm × D 14 cm (excluding base)
• Materials: Ceramic fragments, glass bead medium, gold leaf, aluminum powder, lacquer, washi paper
• Design & Production: KAKERA (CACL Inc.)
• Exhibition Location: 3F Lobby, Hyatt Centric Kanazawa
This installation incorporates ceramic fragments with diverse backgrounds, including Kutani ware damaged during the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake and off-spec white porcelain from the manufacturing process. Each fragment—differing in color, pattern, and shape—was carefully assembled to form the number “5” as a three-dimensional work.
Objects once considered unusable or broken take on new meaning in a fresh context, gaining renewed purpose. And precisely because they are “kakera”—fragments—they open up infinite possibilities for expression. With this idea in mind, each piece was designed to play a meaningful role in the whole.

In selecting the materials, we also drew inspiration from traditional Ishikawa aesthetics—such as the Kutani Gosai (the five-color palette of Kutani ware), which is reflected in the interior of Hyatt Kanazawa. The aim was to create a one-of-a-kind piece that resonates with the hotel’s design philosophy while standing out as a distinctive presence within the space.
Background of the Collaboration
The relationship between CACL and Hyatt Kanazawa began when the hotel supported our 2024 crowdfunding campaign launched in the wake of the Noto Peninsula Earthquake:
“First Step for Noto Earthquake Recovery – Creating Jobs for Artisans through Wajima Lacquer × Kutani Ware Collaboration and Workshop Reconstruction.”
As part of the return gifts, we organized a series of collaborative activities, including special events and hands-on workshops using ceramic fragments. The partnership deepened further when General Manager Matsumoto and members of the Hyatt Kanazawa team visited our studio and took part in volunteer efforts to collect kakera (fragments) by hand.

Through this growing relationship, Hyatt Kanazawa approached us to create a commemorative art piece in celebration of their 5th anniversary. Some of the fragments used in the work were originally collected during the volunteer “kakera gathering” efforts we shared together at that time.
About KAKERA
KAKERA is a design brand that gives new life to what has been left behind.
We work with materials that fall outside of predefined standards—things deemed unusable or discarded for various reasons. But these fragments are also creative building blocks, naturally shaped with unintended edges, and offer new ways of seeing the world around us.
By using these overlooked pieces—kakera—we create a wide range of products and materials that embody the beauty of imperfection and possibility.
